Data Visualizations from the 1900 Paris Exhibition

This weekend I was down in the Portland Art Museum with my little girl and we came across this display of data visualizations created for the 1900 Paris Exhibition. The subject? “The Exhibit of American Negroes” created by W.E. B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington and Thomas Calloway.

Not only is the data fascinating and socially relevant to our modern world, but gazing upon hand-drawn visualizations, the kind of which we can currently turn out in minutes with modern tools, is quite the experience.

These photos aren’t great for #reasons, and are only a small sample of what you can see, should you go there in person. #recommended!
