Oregon Parks and Recreation Department unveils revamped websites
After three years and millions of visitors, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) rolled out a newly-designed website in April. Among a long list of significant improvements, OPRD now offers service through four website addresses:
http://www.oregonstateparks.org
Information for park visitors and people planning a trip. The site is packed with park information, maps, events, photos (including spinning 360-degree panoramas), beach safety and fast access to the online reservation website. Online reservations are handled through a private company: Reserve America. The key new feature on www.oregonstateparks.org is called myParks. MyParks allows visitors to create and store personalized lists of their favorite parks on the website to make planning for extended trips easier.
http://www.shpo.state.or.us
The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) site. SHPO's website provides easy access to a wide range of publications, including monthly lists of historic open houses, as well as a complete list of staff services, news releases and contact information. Historic preservation enthusiasts can point-and-click their way through Oregon properties and districts on the National Register of Historic Places.
http://atv.prd.state.or.us
OPRD administers the state All-Terrain Vehicle program, and this website provides information on permits (including where to buy them), places to ride, and program funding and grants. Links to the new state ATV safety programs are also included.

In addition to links to all OPRD websites, this website contains new-to-the-web information on OPRD grants, regulatory responsibilities, employment, volunteering, news releases and master planning. The ORPD Commission, looking out over the next decade and beyond, has set forth a number of goals and priorities for the state park system. Called Target 2014, the website contains related publications, commission meeting dates and the newly-released ORPD Biannual Report.
The sites are tied together through links and a search tool.
At the height of last summer, the site served more than 35,000 visitors a week. The new features announced this month should reach even more people, according to OPRD webmaster Chris Havel.
"The new services we offer online came about thanks to the direct involvement of our customers," Havel says. "We've looked at thousands of email messages sent since 1998 to pull together the most beneficial features."
Working hand-in-hand with OPRD Public Affairs staff, the sites were designed and engineered by Amazing Online Marketing , a Portland web business founded in 1995. Amazing Online Marketing has worked under contract for OPRD since 1998, and specializes in web strategy, graphic design, ecommerce, database technology, project management and marketing.
