NEW BIOLOGY INTERACTIVES:

Over the past year and a half we’ve been working on a multi-media science education project for Oregon Public Broadcasting (http://www.opb.org) called “Rediscovering Biology.” The site is not yet live to the public - but you can view the video series online, and two more interactives are ready:

WE'RE STILL AMAZING:

Years back, before the Internet bubble had started “Amazing Online Marketing” seemed like a good name to us. But the truth is, the core of our business is *building* top quality, functional Web sites - not internet marketing. Our name has been misleading prospects for years, so we're changing it. We’re still AMAZING, but our name is now “AMAZING! Web Development”, because we feel that says it all.

NEW EDUCATIONAL SITE

Built for Oregon Public Broadcasting (http://www.opb.org) and the Annenberg Foundation (http://www.learner.org) Artifacts & Fiction is a multi-media professional development workshop series for teachers. The workshop includes eight hour-long video sessions, printed session guides and an extensive interactive Web site. Take a look:

NEW EDUCATIONAL SITE:
Built for Portland State University, Amazing's Extended CLRAS (Career and Life Role Assessment System) enables Oregon's primary and secondary teachers to evaluate all special education students' year-to-year improvements. Funding for this project is provided by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) through Portland State University.

Previously when Oregon teachers went to assess their special education students they had to wrangle through a stack of 400 potential pages of paper forms *per student*, number 2 pencils, and a long turn-around time to get the results. What do teachers gain by moving this system to the Web?
  • A simpler system to deal with forms - XCLRAS chooses which forms the teachers need
  • Immediate results available for printing or downloading via PDF
  • Tracks the student from elementary through post-secondary schooling
What does the Oregon Department of Education get out of this?
  • Integration with the other ODE online assessments
  • Faster reporting for Federal requirements
Best of all, the new system helps the parents and students by making it easier to track the student's progress over time. XCLRAS is built to capture data for at least 10,000 students, and hold at least 200,000 assessments over the next five years.

This new system positions Oregon at the forefront of the student assessment software industry for special education students and proves a valuable example for teachers in other states. Amazing is proud to contribute to the education and well being of Oregon students.

The XCLRAS system is not available to the public. Please call if you'd like to arrange a demo.

November 2003
CELEBRATION - 8 years of creative independence!
It's looking like 2003 is going to finish up as a record business year. If we've made it this far, we must have learned something along the way.

CURRENT PROJECTS:
Portland State University
Remember those standardized tests you had to take in elementary school? Since February 2003 we've been working with the Department of Special Education at PSU to move their paper-and-pencil based assessment system to the Web. The system we're building will be used by special education teachers in the State of Oregon whose students participate in a functional living skills curriculum. The system will allow teachers to assess and track the progress of their students throughout their entire secondary and post secondary school education.

OPB - Rediscovering Biology: Molecular to Global Perspective
The Biology project is a multi-million dollar effort to bring America's high school biology teachers up to speed on the latest developments in the field. AMAZING is providing web site design, textbook layout, 3-D animations, and flash-based interactive case studies based on current biology research. We're close to finishing this one up. Here's a preview of the flash interactives, developed with the help of Bergmann Graphics and Darrel Plant:
http://www.amz.com/frogz
http://www.amz.com/HIV

OPB - Bridging World History
Bridging World History is an Annenberg-funded project to create an educational series to bring High School teachers up to speed on how to teach World History. This series is the biggest project OPB has ever undertaken. In association with Hot Pepper Studios we're delivering several important things for this project - creative direction for the series logo and video materials, incidental illustrations and all the maps. We're proud to have the opportunity to contribute to the education of millions of American children.

New Site
Oregon State Marine Board. Need to find a place to take your boat? Now you can browse through over 900 marinas, boat ramps and other marine facilities. Everything from your canoe to your 100 foot yacht will find a home here. The site includes information on how to find good fishing, information on nearby State Parks, regulations, local hazards and more. Nearly everything you see on the site can be edited by the Marine Board from a web-based administration tool. In fact, the database we created for the site is also now the centralized master repository for the details the Marine Board keeps on their facilities.

Craig's travel site
Due to the lack of a decent internet connection he's currently well over a month behind in updating it. We generally hear from him a couple times each week. If you look at his map of Australia he's cutting across the horn in the upper right. He says that it's not practical to ride all the way to the top because there aren't any bridges across the rivers and big things with spiky teeth live in the water. More info at www.lunky.com

And just for fun again...
Broadband users prefer Net over TV
From www.macuser.co.uk
November 27, 2001 - A survey for Btopenworld (UK) has found that broadband Internet users are spending more time on the Net and less time watching the boob-tube. According to research by Fletcher Advisory, 34 percent of those surveyed said that time once spent on the couch watching TV is now spent surfing.

Broadband users have reduced their TV time by an average of five hours a week. They also reported that their viewing habits have changed, saying they now watched less 'junk' TV and more late night shows and films.

Nearly half of those surveyed, 48 percent, revealed that their computers permanently are left on 24/7 to take advantage of the always-on broadband connection.

On Surviving and Thriving
Everyone out there who's glad 2001 is over, raise your hands. The dust is settling. A lot of companies who thought they'd do "web stuff" are gone. We're still here, going on seven years of helping clients in Portland. For those of you who believed in us in the early days, thank you. I think we've proved that you don't have to hire the largest company to get business stability. It takes something more, heart and dedication. After all the turmol of the past year, things are looking up for 2002. To celebrate we're offering our customers free time - two hours of our time - to do anything you need web-wise. HTML-editing, graphics, programming... need it done? Just call us. Speaking of calling us:
NEW PHONE NUMBERS:
Voice: 503.827.3500

Teleport Fallout
Bad things happened to a lot of Teleport customers as a result of the series of buyouts. Fortunately, our clients generally took our advice and hosted with a quality ISP (you know who you are). In case you know anyone who got burned, we're passing along this information on the class action suit: If anyone was using Teleport for hosting during the meltdown (from January 2001 onward) and had trouble uploading pages, or any other website-related problems, the attorneys would also like that information. They are particularly interested in commercial sites, but any corroborating information will be welcome.

Previously members had no way of getting a complete up-to-date list of everyone's contact information. Now everyone's just a few clicks away on the Portland Chamber Web site. Now the Chamber can keep everyone in the group online instead of faxing out paper when a member needed a phone number or an address. As an added bonus Amazing created an email tool so that the leadership can send broadcast emails to everyone in the group simply by typing in a Web form. Earlier in the month AMAZING launched a simple redesign of the Oregon Brewers Festival Web site. In it's twelfth year, the OBF is the largest gathering of craft brewers in North America and attracts over 90,000 beer lovers to Portland's Waterfront Park during the three day event. AMAZING wow'ed the crowd by sending electronic photo postcards live from the festival. Happy beer drinkers were able to get digital photos of themselves with their friends posted to the OBF site and an email sent with the address. This promoted the festival as a whole, and drove additional Web traffic to bring people back next year.

You have to get to know people, how they work, what they're looking for. The leads group helps you learn to do that effectively, expanding your local network so you can reach more people."
